Solution to Known Issue for 1st Generation Chevy Cruze

1st generation Chevy Cruze vehicles (my daughter has a 2014 1.4T) are notorious for these PCV membrane issues that crack and lots of SES/CEL -Causes codes to be resolved by replacing the camshaft valve cover and in some cases requiring replacement of the intake manifold as well. Dorman has corrected some of these design flaws and added a lifetime warranty on both of these components. Since their improvements don't necessarily fix design flaws, I decided to install their component as the Delco AC version only has a 2 year warranty and if anything goes wrong with this Dorman unit I'll put the lifetime warranty in claim. The camshaft cover wasn't difficult, but it was a tedious job as there are many hoses and wiring harnesses in close proximity to this cover. Per Chilton's instructions, you also need to unplug some electrical connectors and remove the ignition coil to properly remove this cover. You also need to unscrew 15 E10 Torx screws to finally remove it. Don't forget that if this is the original cover you are replacing it may be well glued as not only the gasket can stick to the surface of the engine but also the RTV in front (right side, near the pulleys) . . makes it difficult to remove the old coating. I used a nylon cutting tool to avoid scratching the aluminum block and after a few tries it came loose. The new block was perfect. I used a gray RTV as directed and followed Chilton's (71 in-lbs) tightening sequence to secure. I reset the ECM (removed the #2 and #10 15A fuses for 10 minutes and then reinstalled them) and restarted the car. Doesn't matter! For starters, the annoying whistling or chirping of the PCV cone is long gone, but the car also ran much smoother and accelerated noticeably better. As an added bonus, all SES/CEL error messages were no longer displayed. Note: As Dorman pointed out, it is important to ensure that the intake manifold check valve is still in place. If not, it is highly recommended to replace the intake manifold as well. It may be too early to count a win but based on the immediate results I am very pleased with how this Dorman replacement cam cover correctly handled my daughter's 2014 issue. Problems with Chevrolet Cruze 1.4T.
