I use this over the corner of my parrot cage in a 5.5" light with a fluker clip. I have it hanging/clamping about 5-6 inches from the top of the cage and the bird perch is about 4 inches below the top of the cage. So I'd say 10 inches or more - not less - is a comfortable distance from your feathered friends. It emits a soft purple-blue glow. I turn it off during the day to prolong its lifespan as my birds are out of the cage all day before bed.
