I used this particular coupling when replacing the shower drain in the basement. The 2" steel drain pipe broke and the male end was still screwed into the 2" FIP socket. This little guy saved the day - or rather, saved a massive concrete cutting job removing enough slab to find the next good fixture. I machined the panel around the socket leaving me about 1/2 inch. After grinding the remaining concrete off the steel flare, this Fernco part was easy to attach (with some silicone spray to lubricate) to the OD of the flare. The other end of the coupler attaches to my new shower drain (a 2" PVC coupler comes in handy). They leveled the drain, tightened the clamps, concreted the fitting - now my basement shower project is back in the lines.
