Adequate, but not nearly as strong as advertised for real-world use.

Fit and finish is nice. The magnets are reasonably strong, but only for very light applications.Unfortunately the descriptions of magnetic strength appear to correlate poorly with typical real-world use. The best I can imagine for their meaning when they describe vertical and horizontal magnet strength is that they mean if you stick it to a vertical metal surface, you could pull downward (vertically) up to 140 lb before it would slip; and similarly could pull outward (horizontally) with up to 35 lb before it would release. I tested pulling it outward (horizontally) off of three ferrous surfaces: my stainless refrigerator, my enameled steel wash machine, and piece of 1/8" thick steel. The first two seem much more reasonable for a typical use case, but the last does speak to what the magnet might be capable of in more ideal settings. When I pulled it outward horizontally (using two ends of a woven cord positioned at opposite sides to apply axial force without leveraging it off), I got up to 20 lb on the refrigerator, 13 lb on the wash machine, and 40 lb on the 1/8 steel. If they meant that this would hold 35 lb in these scenarios, then I would say even this is exaggerated because typical uses are extremely unlikely to pair this with thick steel. I did not comprehensively test the slip forces (vertical), as these will be highly dependent on the specific surface finish. I got less than 3 lb on my fridge though. I will say that even if you assumed they actually got 35 lb of axial force, that would require a friction coefficient of 4 to obtain, which is very unlikely. I would expect coefficients of less than 1 on most surfaces, meaning it would slip at less than the force required to pull the magnet straight off the surface. If a thin layer of rubber were added, maybe close to or a little over 1; though that would put the magnet further from the surface and thus decrease the magnetic force to some degree. I've not tried the included non-stick adhesive pads, but they appear very slippery rather than grippy. With the above statements, I think you would be doing exceptionally well if on a given surface you were ever able to hang up to 10 lb. I would net bet on being able to do more than that, and I think in many situations it will slip with less weight than that. I saw less than 3 lb before slip on the smooth surface of my fridge.Fortunately, all I really needed to hang from one of these was a pair of headphones, so they work fine for my needs.

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design adds to the aesthetic value of any room
Cons
  • Requires proper preparation of surface before use
