This waffle maker gets 5 stars for my use: Tater Tot make waffles, but some of its downsides may be a downside for waffle lovers. On the other hand, it is compact and storable in closed position. Appearance is attractive (but gets very hot). Higher quality non-stick surface than I expected. I appreciate the warming/ready lights. Disadvantages relate to the heating capacity. The iron took longer than expected to reach cooking temperature. After I added the thawed patties, it took almost 6 minutes to get back to the ready-to-cook temperature. I'm assuming the more expensive waffle maker has a more powerful heating element. I LOVE this iron for my purposes. I would recommend it for real waffles with the caveats above. Update 07/22/2018: We only used the waffle maker for the third time today after we had only baked two waffles at a time in the last four months. The lid latch broke rendering the waffle maker unusable. Inside the broken piece, the plastic looked like it was a few years old instead of a few months old. It appeared porous and was brittle. We still like the size and other features of this waffle maker, but the materials aren't what they should be. Substitute. I negotiated shipping for up to $6 (up from $11+). If the replacement breaks, I will not pay for shipping again.
