I used acid to clean and reuse. I emptied the cartridge of all debris, rinsed with water, drained as much as possible, placed upside down in a 5 gallon plastic bucket, filled the cartridge with undiluted pool acid, waited 24 hours, then rinsed again. In this way, many crystals came out and all spots disappeared. Previously the crystals were just stuck in and the passages looked disgusting. Now it looks clean. Of course, precautions must be taken when working with pool acid. It etches and stains concrete. I've read that bleach doesn't work on uric acid crystals.
