I bought this in mid 2014 for my Macbook Pro (Mac OS Mojave). However, in macOS recovery mode, this SSD could not be recognized. So a Time Machine backup won't help much. Don't install 850 SSD yet for it to work. First, use Carbon Clone Copy to create a bootable backup (clone) of your original SSD to an external hard drive (its backup is bootable). You can then replace the 850 SSD for your Macbook. After installing the new 850 SSD, boot your Macbook from the external hard drive (the clone is bootable), use Disk Utility app to format the 850 SSD to APFS, then set up the backup (clone). the new 850 ssd hard drive, turn on your macbook when you see the apple logo and login screen, voila! PS, an external SSD speeds up the whole process! If time machine recovery could work, it might be easier.
