The switch itself is made of plastic but looks solid enough. Since the two came together, I have a backup. It works great for what I needed, which was turning the lights on and off in the watch without having to bend down. Update 12/14/2019: One switch broke after a year, so I installed a second one. Haven't changed the lamp more than 200-300 times in a year. However; I ordered more for spares because when the switch works it works fine. Update 3/28/2020: I'm on my third switch now. The mechanism that contains the switch is very similar to that of a clicking pen, however the plastic used in it is brittle and will break after a short time. The plastic in the mechanics of ballpoint pens lasts almost forever. The last of these switches only lasted a month before breaking.
