This is an amazing product at a reasonable price. We monitor the temperature of our wood stove because we are new to wood burning. We also have a laser device that measures the temperature of the oven, so we can be doubly sure we're really hot, as firefighters and others have recommended to prevent creosote build-up. If you're new to soapstone, it's really worth it! We keep it for about 400 days. Note and also use Rutland Creosote Remover (1 scoop twice a week). As long as it works! Plus, it's made in the USA. Update 1/20/16: We still rely on this thermometer to keep us from getting too cold or too hot. It's the best we've ever invested in a soapstone wood stove. We haven't had a chimney fire for about 6 years (in one case the fire brigade had to be called and in another there was an accident). So now we are no longer "newbies" (perhaps "middleman") and LOVE the warmth of our wood stove. We are very thankful that we bought this product, although the chimney sweep who visited our home told us we didn't need it. Yes!
