Review on ๐Ÿ”ฅ Enhanced Performance with MAHLE TM1497 Map-Controlled Thermostat, standard by Kevin Johnson

Better packaging and a sealed box would be nice, but works well.

2006 BMW 330i The thermostat housing was not sealed and the thermostat just sat in there with no additional protection. The packaging says Made in Germany. The thermostat worked well, except it took a bit of KY and superhuman strength to connect the larger plastic hose. Please note the OEM is Wahler (like my old thermostat). Your old thermostat might have an aluminum body, but all new ones are plastic. The replacement procedure can be found online, but here's the summary: Remove the main skid plate. Remove the front skid plate (and brackets). Loosen the power steering hose bracket and tie it at the back - Loosen the stabilizer bar and tie it at the back. (Tightening torque of the nuts 21 Nm). - Disconnect the electrical plug connections on the pump and thermostat, clean and hide from moisture. - Pull off the lower water pump hose and drain it. - Loosen the clamp on the upper water pump hose until it has to be removed. - The two torx screws on the water pump (tightening torque 10 Nm).- Loosen the two common thermostatic screws of the water pump.- Remove the upper Torx screw of the water pump.- Dismantle the water pump by pulling it out of the upper hose (Supplement: replace this hose, it will be wrong treated and will likely leak, like mine, Rein CHE0496) - Disconnect the thermostat hoses that were connected to the water pump can remain unplugged at the wire bracket for the time being before it can be removed (note the orientation of the hoses, the standard clamps use). Remove the thermostat and move the one hose that is still connected to the new thermostat. Reinstall the water pump and thermostat. reverse order.- On reassembly, lubricate the hoses with anti-freeze, if this is not sufficient, lubricate with KY.- Fill with coolant by removing the bleed screw (pre-mix BMW coolant with distilled water before filling).- Tighten the bleed plug and replace the cap a.- Perform the bleed procedure: plug in the ignition, press the start button (do not start the car), both temperature controls on maximum, press and hold the gas button for 10-15 seconds, wait for 12 minutes to allow air to flow (the water pump should make bubbling sounds intermittently) . Fill in coolant.- Repeat the bleeding process.- Fill in coolant.- Install anti-roll bar and power steering hose holder when bleeding.- Install underride guard. hoses. I did not remove the fan assembly, it makes access to the top water pump screw difficult but not impossible.

Pros
  • Stable test results
Cons
  • Almost everything is fine
