Review on Interlux Y333 PT Brushing Fluid_Ounces by Jason Burnside

Thinner extends paint drying time

This product will not function as a regular thinner. I followed the directions and applied a first coat of Schooner Gold thinned 50% with Interlux #333 Thinner. This layer of paint did not want to dry. It was still sticky after 24 hours. Interlux technical service (he called back very quickly) suggested sanding the surface lightly or treating it with metal wool to break the film that had formed on the surface of the paint. This worked for flat surfaces but not for the milled molding on the door. In those crevices he was too fat. There I had to use small brass and plastic brushes; with a plastic scraper and worked for 6 hours while the door was out in the 85F sun on a May afternoon to remove the excess. Thinner Interlux No. 333 is described as "slow drying thinner" and "extends drying"; no joke! I had to wait 48 hours (including 6 hours in the hot Texas sun) for the diluted polish to dry before applying the next coat of polish. The 2nd and 3rd layers were 100% varnish and dried well but with a rough surface. I have found that 100% Schooner Gold dries 1/3-1/2 times faster than #333 diluted polish. I thinned the fourth coat by 25% with regular mineral spirits and the surface became smoother. I did some test patterns and settled on a 50% solution with mineral spirits, using a foam brush for the fifth and final coat. The cheap foam brush performed better than the expensive Purdy. You can see that in the photo. I also used Interlux #333 to thin Schooner Gold for Wash Coat before dying and interstaining as directed. I had no drying problems but in both cases the liquid was 75% thinner than Interlux #333 and the stain was gone in a few minutes. I am happy with the end result. I just wish that following the directions with Interlux #333 Thinner doesn't cause me the problems I've been experiencing. I've worked in chemical and oil refineries for 35 years and this stuff smells really bad. I'm glad I had a good respirator with two organic vapor canisters.
