Review on πŸ’» M.2 2280 SSD Heatsink Cooler, Thermalright Dual-Sided Heat Sink with Thermal Silicone Pads for Gaming PC, PS5, M.2 PCIE NVMe SSD, M.2 SATA SSD-2280 by Trae Joubert

Great heatsink, but thin thermal pads may not work with all SSDs

This is an attractive heatsink with a thoughtful design to cool your NVMe drive. The low-profile shape is ideal for motherboards with M.2 slots next to PCIe slots where a larger heatsink would get in the way. Installation is as simple as four screws, but the included thermal pads are pretty flimsy (0.5mm top and bottom). On some SSDs with parts of different heights, these standoffs may not be compressed enough to touch all of the heat-generating components. In my case, a small gap was visible above the controller chip, so I had to replace my 1.0mm thermal pad to make good contact with the top of my drive. In use, the heatsink does its job well, providing plenty of surface area to disperse and dissipate the heat generated by the SSD. I haven't experienced thermal throttling since installing this heatsink on an NVMe drive, and the cooler temperatures will no doubt translate to improved reliability over the long term. Overall I'm happy with the performance of this heatsink, but I can't help but be a little disappointed that I had to provide my own thermal pad for a good fit. The manufacturer could have improved the compatibility of this kit by including a slightly thicker top pad (or even a pair of different sized pads). Four stars.
