We've had these gates (one for the bottom of the stairs and one for the top) for the last 4 months and love them. The doors are sturdy and look great. Our son who is 2 years old and very strong cannot open it no matter how hard he tries. We call him a linebacker, and he's muscular, 90th percentile height/weight. One day a kid in our kitchen opened a locked drawer because he needed a yogurt spoon. You won't believe how strong this kid is, so that's saying something. One side attaches to a bar that screws to the wall, while the other side slides into a latch that screws to the wall. The deadbolt has a built in stop to prevent the gate from swinging further than the deadbolt. The snapper can be pressed relatively gently against the latch and engages with an audible click. The latch has a thumb lever that pushes down while lifting the latch with flexed fingers to release the latch from the latch. Our very little 6 year old girl needs 2 of her tiny hands to open this gate. Our 8 year old daughter opens the gate with no problem. It takes a little getting used to, but we're happy with how it works. You need to figure out which side you want the swing side to be, which side you want the latch to be, and which way you want the gate to open. Our gate deviates significantly from the stairs both at the top and bottom. Before you proceed with the installation, you should check whether this product is right for you. It is important to know that not all stairs are created equal. Our stairways are enclosed, meaning both sides of the stairway from top to bottom have drywall on each side. However, the spots where we installed the gate may not have studs behind the drywall, so we had to add plastic anchors for reinforcement. SO YOU CAN'T INSTALL ANYTHING ON THE DRYPSBOARD ALONE, they'll crash right out of the wall if a kid rattles the gate while it's closed, or if you walk past with leashes blocking your view and not realizing it's been left open . then, entering, he pushed it past the turning point. Additionally, if you have a wood/metal railing at the base of the stairs instead of a wall, you will need to incorporate a wood or metal plate into the railing to allow the equipment to be properly installed. Now installation. I threw away the template they gave. These steps are easier to follow and will ensure a smooth closing: 1) Take the 2 hinges which are 2 halves and push the halves apart. The top of each hinge is a piece that has silver metal protruding from it. Set the top half aside for the final steps. Install the lower part of the lower axle in the wall with a screw and attach the lower corner of the gate to it. 2) Support the gate with one hand and insert the bottom half of the upper axle into the top corner of the gate. then push against the wall. It would be helpful to have a second person hold the gate, but that's difficult to do alone. 3) While holding the upper axle and the gate, check that the gate is plumb with the leveling. After tilting the gate, mark the holes for the top hinges at plumb level. 4) Remove the gate from the bottom hinge and install the top hinge in the wall. 5) Assemble the gate on both hinges, then unscrew and remove the top and bottom parts of the handle. She. Set them aside along with their screws. 6) Notice the adjustable screws on each corner of the gate. Screw the screws on the side of the latch into the gate as far as possible. You may have to unscrew the washer completely to allow the screw to be fully tightened. 7) Slide the gate so that these screws touch the wall where the latch is located. BOTH screws should contact the raw wall EVENLY. THIS STEP IS IMPORTANT IF YOU WANT THE GATE TO CLOSE SMOOTHLY. If they don't both touch the wall, lengthen/shorten the screws on the side of the transom so they both touch the wall evenly. You should NOT just have the top touching the wall and the bottom hanging in the air or vice versa. This means it is perfectly parallel to the ground. If necessary, adjust the screws on the side of the hinge to achieve the perfect height. If adjustments are made on the hinge side, you will need to adjust the latch side as described in the previous step. 9) With the gate level and both top/bottom screws touching the transom wall evenly, reattach the top/bottom black handles to the center of the gate rails and use the screws to secure them to the top/bottom rails. If necessary, you can move the gate slightly so that the handles fit between the slats of the gate. In order not to worry about the side locking screws, you can pull them out so that after the gate is closed they reach to the wall to fit in the handles as they are very long. (You might not like the look of the screws sticking out the side of the latch, so if you want you can lengthen the screws on the hinge side to "push" the gate toward the latch, but be (Aware that you will need to re-adjust the screws on the side latches so that they evenly contact the bare wall. ALWAYS CHECK THAT THE GATE IS OFF THE GROUND ON THE SIDE OF THE TURN AFTER ANY ADJUSTMENTS.) 10) Set the top latch into the one top screw of the gate and screw in or out the screw as needed; it should not fit snugly against the latch, as if pressing the latch against the wall. It must be carefully loaded into it. It's okay if it wobbles a bit as long as it's recessed and locking the gate in place. MAKE SURE THE LATCH IS POINTING IN THE CORRECT DIRECTION. 11) Mark the holes in the latch. 12) Open the gate and install the top latch in the wall. Close the door in the latch and make sure the stopper is facing the right way. 13) Install the bottom latch in the same way as the top latch. This one has more leeway than the one above. 14) Place the tops onto the hinges and screw into place. Tighten the nuts on all corners of the gate. (I put a dab of superglue on each nut and then screwed it in.) Done!
