I have marked dark wooden floors for cutting and tried different markers, crayons, grease pencils, Chinese markers and pencils. Even tailor's chalk. A white charcoal or chalk pencil works best. It was very easy to see and strong enough to be cut but carefully removed. However, this pencil "lead" would continue to break in a conventional bladed pencil sharpener. Hand sharpening was also difficult to get the chalk right and not break the chalk. This sharpener works perfectly every time. The ability to set to blunt or sharp was a purchase consideration as I wasn't sure what would work best. This feature increases the versatility of both the crayon and other pens for other uses. I use USB power, not batteries. But having that option again adds versatility. Great purchase with great versatility.
