Review on ELECROW RC050S: 5" Capacitive Touchscreen Raspberry Monitor - Portable & High Resolution (800X480P) by Lagant Bonnet

Revainrating 3 out of 5

It's barely ok and has serious tearing issues!

Good things first: the screen works with the Pi 4 I tested on; touch screen works; and the sound works too. Really Bad: It has a bad case of screen tearing. This is with the latest clean install of the default Raspberry Pi OS. I've tried everything to get rid of the tearing, but to no avail. This can be a stumbling block when you need a screen for gaming or fast video. Not Great: I really don't think it's an IPS display as the viewing angles are quite narrow. Nowhere in the docs or online is it mentioned that it is an IPS screen other than this Amazon listing. Also, the image displayed has a grainy, blotchy quality, like the really cheap TFT screens of the past. All in all, I find the screen too expensive. What you need to know: There are TWO protective films on the screen that need to be removed. The first is very obvious, but the second adhered pretty well and it's hard to tell if it's even there. Even the green tab that's supposed to help you remove it easily peels off without detaching the foil. Just paste the green tab back in and try again. My work on the 3. try.Config.txt settings they give is wrong and actually contradicts itself. That suggests that the manufacturer really doesn't understand what they're doing. Here's what you should have: # This forces the Pi to use the screen and the second line turns on HDMI audio hdmi_force_hotplug=1 hdmi_drive=2 # This is for touch overlay: dtoverlay=ads7846,cs=1,penirq=25 ,penirq_pull=2,speed=50000,keep_vref_on=0,swapxy=0,pmax=255,xohms=150,xmin=200,xmax=3900,ymin=200,ymax=3900Pi recognizes screen mode well so don't add it need the following, actually this has no effect (nor fixes any tearing), but if you insist (it forces 800x480p 60Hz mode): hdmi_group=2 hdmi_mode=87 hdmi_cvt=800 480 60 6 0 0 0 Make sure that Disable overscan or you will get black borders around . To disable rescanning go to raspi-config, either GUI or CLI is fine for this.

Pros
  • Best 5 inch display I could find but for the price I could go for a 7 inch display maybe a cheap 10 inch display.
Cons
  • You can't see what's on the side of the screen when you look from a different angle
