I bought my 10 year old nephew a pocket knife for his birthday and wanted to give him a sharpening stone. It's compact enough that I can store it anywhere or even take it with me if I want, saving me the time getting my kit. If you're just learning how to sharpen, this is a great way to get used to holding your knife properly. If you're an experienced sharpener, you'll appreciate the simplicity and overall design, and you'll have your blade ready anyway.
