I compare them to cotton swabs. Q-Tips are good for my ears and I've been using Q-Tips to polish things in my Dremel tool for years. Over the years, cotton swabs have had less cotton and have not been uniform in size, so I've recently started using these applicators with cotton swabs for cleaning and buffing. The cotton tip varies slightly in size but they are all tightly wrapped making them much better for cleaning and buffing than cotton swabs. They last longer, don't wind up, and work better. They are very good for cleaning guns and polishing and as they are screwed in tight they will not loosen in the Dremel tool. If your application calls for a tightly wound Q tip these are great for you. Wooden sticks are as strong as they look, they are not brittle but will break if you use enough force. I haven't broken any yet, they are much stronger than Q-Tip rods.
