Sponges were needed for my incubator to increase humidity. I've tried polyester sponges (especially those hourglass sponges), they push water through instead of absorbing it unless you crush them, and they kinda suck them in, reshape and suck up water. No no no. I have this and THAT is what I need. When you put them in water, they will slowly absorb the water into the sponge by themselves. This is what you need in an incubator if you want to put a sponge in a water fountain. It MUST soak up water on its own and stay wet all the time to allow the moving air to evaporate the water in the sponge, and when that moisture comes out the sponge draws in more to replace it. Here's how it works. They're thick, feel durable, and absorb water very well. Since they seem to have a shelf life and I add disinfectant to the incubator water, they should stay in great shape for a long time and not get dirty. The price is good enough that I can replace them when they get clogged with hard water every few years. And I might not have to if I change them every now and then and soak them in vinegar to break up buildup. I'm really happy with them. So much so that I've just ordered another pack for enough to swap out and soak in vinegar from time to time.
