I have a 29 gallon tank, about 7 Revain Sword plants, gravel substrate and tap water (with prime conditioner to remove chlorine). The tank is not overloaded. In between some mollies, guppies and about 20 inches of total fish. After cleaning the walls and substrate about every 4 days, brown algae were visible throughout the tank. I read on the Internet and a lot of things turned up for the cause of seaweed -1. New aquarium. My aquarium has been fully functional for months so I've been missing it.2. High nitrates - I measured this and it was consistently around 20-30 and I want to keep it the same for the plants. I know changing the water is important but I would like to do it every 2-4 weeks instead of every 4th day which is crazy! The nitrates weren't between 80 and 100, so I didn't want to do anything here. High Light - My light only runs 6-7 hours a day and is essential for the plants so I didn't want to change anything there.4. High content of silicates. I didn't have a silicate test kit and didn't want to buy one. I also didn't want to switch to RO or store-bought water. I don't have a sandy substrate, which some locations say is the cause of silicates. So with the elimination process I decided to remove the silicates from the water instead of buying an algae killer which can be temporary or have more side effects. Cleaned the walls and vacuumed the substrate again, put 3-4 teaspoons in my filter bag and 8 days passed and no trace of algae. The fish and plants are not harmed in any way and are happy! I guess once the silicates are gone I won't have to put that in the filter anymore. I can run a 5 gallon bucket of tap water 4-5 times during a water change every 3 weeks before refilling the tank. Let's see if that works.
