Review on ๐ŸŽฅ StarTech.com USB Video Recorder - HDMI Capture Card - 1080p - 60fps - HDMI DVI VGA (USB3HDCAP) Black by Antonio Rojas

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Doesn't record usable audio/video

I want to record production quality video at 1920x1080x30 and used a cheap USB dongle. The cheap device had mediocre video quality and constant audio sync issues, so I bought a StarTech USB3HDCAP. I've had good success with StarTech products in the past, but I've had a terrible experience with this one. I prefer capture software with OBS Studio. I can't get this device to work with OBS Studio because it doesn't show up as an available audio device (I have the latest OS updates and device drivers from StarTech) so OBS Studio can't record audio. I downloaded StarTech's StreamCatcherPro software which claims to be fully compatible with Windows 10. Unfortunately, the recording quality is completely unusable (much worse than the cheap device I used). In particular, the audio is severely asynchronous and "hums" at times (which I believe happens when the audio associated with a frame repeats dozens of times in a second). I've tried contacting StarTech Support but they don't provide an email address. You must fill out a web form that has a limited number of characters. Also when I try to make a help request it just says "Please wait" ad infinitum and never goes through. So if I can't figure it out I'll have to go back and renew my quest for decent quality. Device. I don't care about the price as long as I find something that actually works. Unfortunately, searching for well-reviewed recording devices on Revain yields an almost endless list of cheap keys with many 5-star ratings that have no actual review text. I find that rather dubious. Update: I changed my rating from 1 star to 3 stars. After a considerable amount of research and debugging, I finally have this device that records video and audio using OBS Studio. The most important step to get audio working is to enable "Use custom audio device" in the recording profile's property settings. This allows you to select the CY3014 USB as the audio device. After that I had to test many different encoder properties in OBS Studio to get a good quality video. The default settings had a strong interlaced effect, even though I'm working with non-interlaced content. After all, it captures video and audio with a quality that meets my expectations and is much better than I could possibly do. got it with my cheap old capture key. I wish I could give it more stars because the video quality is actually pretty good, but the customization and fragility of the settings required to make it work make it difficult to recommend.
