Doesn't record usable audio/video

I want to record production quality video at 1920x1080x30 and used a cheap USB dongle. The cheap device had mediocre video quality and constant audio sync issues, so I bought a StarTech USB3HDCAP. I've had good success with StarTech products in the past, but I've had a terrible experience with this one. I prefer capture software with OBS Studio. I can't get this device to work with OBS Studio because it doesn't show up as an available audio device (I have the latest OS updates and device…

Update: Latest driver gives this 5 STARS!

I've had trouble disabling USB on various laptops in the past, so I originally gave this one 1 star. After a few years I noticed that there is FINALLY a new Startech driver for Windows 10 on their website. Tried it out and happy to report that the blackouts are completely gone. Now I can record continuously and am very happy with the flexibility of this USB 3 video capture device. I am planning to connect OSSC to it so I can play and record PS2 and Xbox 480i and 1080i content without snow…

Works great for computers and accessories

I'm always a bit nervous about these types of devices - encoding and capturing video is quite a complex problem that requires fairly well thought out hardware and software. So far everything has worked fine. === Good stuff ===* The product installed easily with almost no glitches (see below). I connected the box to an HDMI cable, plugged the USB3 cable into the USB3 port on my Windows 10 computer and within minutes I was streaming videos to my computer. The install seemed to fail on the first…

Works but requires unofficial drivers and ONLY for Windows 7.

Well the picture quality is excellent and the input selection is perfect. Sounds great right? The catch is that the official driver software doesn't work on modern computers and if you google for custom drivers (from Micomsoft) they are user created and often fail. It works on Windows 10, but I kept getting BSODs even after removing everything. It doesn't do this on Windows 7 and is more stable. I strongly recommend backing up your data and creating multiple restore points before risking…

Unsigned drivers, unsigned application, didn't work

My first impression of this product was bad and then got worse. Neither the driver nor the manufacturer's video capture application are signed, which means Windows refuses to install them. After a long search on the internet I decided to try the installation despite the risk. Both the driver and the application required a reboot after installation, which is not normal for Windows 10. But the most interesting thing is that I finally got through all this and connected my HDMI source (another…

Big Box with a Bad Thing

So, I'm a videographer for the high school football team. Part of my work is putting the game online. The company/software we use uses this box to record from an HDMI source. In this case, my source is a Sony Handycam (various models) and a high-end Lenovo laptop with USB 3.0 ports. USB 3.0 is required to function properly. I've tried USB 2.0 and it might work, but not by much. The manufacturer says you need USB 3.0. Once you get it to start capturing video, it works great. Pros: The box is…

  • Some Bugs

I have a huge collection of VHS and SVHS home videos from the early 80's. All were shot using the most modern equipment of the time and all tapes have excellent picture and sound quality. VHS tapes are as good as it gets. SVHS is great resolution and image quality. I bought an INSIGNIA VHS to DVD with two decks years ago and digitized most of my homemade VHS tapes with very good results. As such, these tapes were available as DVDs and digitized computer generated images. A total of about 100…
