I work in mountainous Pennsylvania, very cold, my face literally starts cracking and freezing when I get out of the car. This hat keeps my whole head warm, the accompanying face mask helps keep the rest of my face warm as you can wear it fully over your nose, mouth and chin or just your mouth and chin. But I would recommend wearing this hat in very cold conditions because unless it is very cold your head will get very hot. The flaps can be fastened under the chin or you can lift them up and fasten them over the hat if you don't want to use them anyway, your head and neck will be warm but the mask can be worn separately without the hat with loops on both ends, which can be fastened around the ears like a medical mask.
