I was surprised by the shrink roll feeding system, but within an hour the steps loosened enough to put the cover on. Some reviewers have mentioned that it was difficult to put the lid on, but I found that I had no problems putting it on before the device was fully relaxed. Our adult dog, who could no longer navigate the steps we bought him many years ago, immediately adopted them. He can easily stand on an ottoman bed. He's a Chihuahua - about 7.5 pounds, and for some reason this breed loves to be picked off the ground. We discovered this after watching an excavation tutorial show. The lovely bed we bought was not used until we put it at the end of the sofa! He liked it there!
