Car batteries have been sealed and maintenance free for decades, so checking the fluid level is a skill most people don't have. This battery must be properly configured and properly maintained to extend its life. First, this battery is shipped dry, so you need to fill it with battery acid (sulphuric acid). Home Depot sells these Basement Watchdog batteries, so I picked up a box of acid from my local home depot. This acid can burn you and damage your clothing and pretty much anything it is spilled on, so be very careful. Safety goggles are a must, as are gloves. Have clean water and paper towels on hand to wash away any acid that gets on you and to wipe up any spills. I'm a chemist so filling the battery with acid correctly was easy for me, but I see many ways to get this battery. from a bad start. First, there is not enough acid in the acid pack to fill each of the cells to the brim. There are six cells and the acid must be distributed evenly to each cell. The Z acid package contains 6 liters of acid. I used a beaker to measure the acid and added 32 ounces of acid to each cell. There was enough room in each cell, so I added two ounces of distilled water to each cell. A month later I added another ounce of water to each cell. Distilled water must be added. With regular use, the minerals in tap water will slowly neutralize the acid in the battery and eventually destroy the battery. In an emergency it would be ok to use tap water but I would only do it once. I left a bottle of distilled water and a small mug next to the battery. I will be checking the acid level every month until I figure out how often to add extra water. I expect to have to top up with water every four months or so until the battery drain pump is used. If the power goes out and the pump is running on battery power I will definitely check the fluid level as the heat will cause some water loss when discharging and recharging. The device is equipped with a sensor that warns you when the liquid level is too low. . I wouldn't recommend waiting for the warning light to come on. It's like the oil level gauge on your car. If it lights up, the charge level is too low. Also, the cells are not connected and the monitor only checks one cell. All cells must behave the same, so if one controlled cell has water, the other must also have water, but this is not guaranteed. At $150 each, I want the battery to last as long as possible, so I check the fluid level and add distilled water if needed.
