No, really. The top is the dispensing part and you need to remove the thin cap. It's just stupid. Also, I'm too lazy to send it back, so I'm just giving the stupid thing away. Update: I changed my two star rating to one star after having to refill my salt shaker. As soon as you take it apart to fill it, batteries will likely explode all over your kitchen, and if you flip this stupid thing over to fill it, it'll crush whatever's left on the floor. In a panic you flip it over only to spill more salt on the floor, at this point I only recommend nailing it to the wall. I hate that.
