I have held my dogs in my hands since they were born. Althea has turned her nose up at rice all her life. It was a matter of course. Oddly enough, she didn't like it. All of them would do the same with certain food jars as well. There was no logic or reason in that, today Turkey was not ok, last week everything was ok. I was always sure that they do not tolerate chicken meat. They weren't allowed to eat it, I warned the family about leftovers etc. Fast forward 14 years and having tried many different brands, all high quality, to no avail, Althea consistently refused their food. On other days she ate, apparently under pressure, and began to vomit blood. Well that caught my attention. The vet wanted to examine her or check for intolerances. The cost difference was huge and given their cryptic behavior with food I decided to have an intolerance but opted to have myself tested, again another huge cost difference. $225 for it. When their results came in, I was amazed. Her list of intolerances was huge and one of the few foods she COULD eat was chicken. I immediately thought the test was wrong. It seemed impossible. I was mad. Looking at the rest of the results, it seems like the items in almost every pot she received were at the top of the no-no list. Like carrots, rice and a few preservatives. It was the results of the trip that got me thinking. It matched her lifelong resistance to it. A few days later, still upset that I had spent money on this test, I cooked my own chicken. I decided to put an end to this. I took a deep breath and gave her half of my chicken breast. She sniffed it and ate it greedily. yes good Let's see if you vomit any more blood. Nothing. She was fine and happy. She was ok with the chicken! Now, with narrowed eyes, I wanted to check it again. I went through the ingredients of several cans, all the turkey (the protein that according to the results she can eat and eats for most of her life), I opened them all and put them in front of her. They had all items except turkey which was high on the bad list, some had less than others. She sniffed cautiously at each glass and walked away from almost all of them, hesitating only at the least offensive glass. Wow. It wasn't about the meat, it was about mixing it with it. Now I cook meat for them because I couldn't find any brands that didn't have anything bad for them. She likes to come to dinner every day. He wolfs down his food and acts like a happy playful old man. The difference is really striking. I will test my other dogs as soon as money allows. I feel terrible because I was unknowingly hurting Altea all along and it won't happen again.
