everything fits perfectly. I was able to easily insert a wild boar or badger brush (on the bristles, not on the handle). There's just enough room for my alum stick to slide to the side behind the brush. It's like it was designed that way on purpose. I use a safety razor, not a Mach3, so I have to place the razor over the top in the groove. The razor sits there perfectly and doesn't run the risk of falling off unless you hit the entire stand. It has survived being soaked and placed in water well. I can get a little dirty when shaving. :-) You won't be disappointed and it won't rust!
