I bought this kit to install jacks in metal number plates for making resonator guitars. The tool and spacers worked as intended when inserted into thin metal panels. I think they will work for tarps or other heavy fabrics too. I bought this tool based on previous reviews - bad for tools that are two or three dollars less, good reviews for this tool and bushing set. In my opinion a good and reliable tool. A few bucks for a better tool is always preferable to a bad tool or product. This is a simple device that doesn't require much engineering. It just works fine. I would buy it again and will if I wear this one. Which I doubt. Buy with confidence.
