The CPU fan in my computer started purring a few days ago, a sure sign that it was dead. "Speccy" (great application to find under the hood of your computer) reported that my average CPU temperature is 60 degrees Celsius. In my quest to replace the CPU fan, I've learned a few things. First, the number is displayed fairly prominently on the motherboard. This number is used to find the correct CPU fan, they don't appear to be interchangeable. There are both 3 and 4 pin headers for fans. Before buying a new fan, check what you have. The attachment of the fan to the mainboard was not obvious to this layman. I watched a video on YouTube that showed pins. The new fan used screws. It was hard for me to see exactly how the old fan was attached. I reached around the tiny gap around the head that turned out to be a clasp. Contrary to the video I watched, these were pins but they didn't have a protruding tab, they were flat. My fingers quickly discovered that they were, in fact, pins and tugged lightly. The new fan uses screws instead of pins. Again, it wasn't obvious to this non-expert or non-geek that the mounting plate that came with the fan should be on the back of the motherboard. Luckily, both sides of my tower case came off and the back of the motherboard was easily accessible. When I discovered this, the installation was quick and smooth. The fan comes with pre-installed thermal paste. The bracket that holds the processor in place does not need to be lifted. That's what I did, trying to figure out how to attach the new fan, with the CPU clip loosened, I accidentally removed the CPU. My stress level immediately skyrocketed. There were two barely visible tiny indentations that provided proper alignment. Wow! In any case, after making all these discoveries, the new fan was easy to install. I was sweating a little when I turned on the computer. did I reinstall the processor correctly? The computer started without any problems. Now Speccy has informed me that my CPU temperature has dropped from 58-65 degrees Celsius (under light load) to 32-42 degrees Celsius. I am very comfortable. I accepted this challenging project because I live in the very rural area of Ocean Shores, Washington. The nearest city, Aberdeen, is 35 minutes away and Olympia (big city) is over an hour away. Good computer scientists are great. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to find someone who is competent and affordable. Replacing the CPU fan was a difficult task, but easily accomplished by anyone with average mechanical skill. I hope this review helps another non-techie.
