My oven had a bad Robershaw HS780 34NL-306A

My oven had a bad Robershaw HS780 34NL-306A. We bought our home 4 years ago and last week our old Coleman gas stove stopped working. I've never worked with an oven so I taught myself how to use the oven, safety and troubleshooting (I like to fix things). After learning what a hot surface igniter is, I figured that must be the problem. It heated up and glowed orange, but the gas didn't ignite. They deteriorate after a few years and either don't heat up or no longer feel the flame. I also checked that there is 24V going to the gas valve after the igniter heats up, and that there is 24V (tested with an ammeter and an AC voltmeter) so I knew the control board was bad and I figured I would check it replace the HSI as he was at least 4 years old and maybe much older. I replaced this Honeywell + a new igniter for a total of $148 + $19.98 and now the oven is working great again! Before I fixed it myself I called the local HVAC company and informed them that my stove has stopped working and I suspect the control board may need to be replaced as it is not sending 24v to the gas valve and how much it is using would charge for replacing the circuit board and the hot surface igniter. They called about $1100. I believe it was a business day call, not a weekend/night call. I suspect they have a lot of overheads to cover, and the San Francisco Bay Area is an expensive place, so I'm not entirely surprised by the offer. Be sure to check the new fire suppression board by doing the following: 1) With the firebox running, turn off the gas flowing into the firebox. This will extinguish the burner flame and the HSI will no longer detect a flame and should close the gas valve (you should hear the gas valve solenoid click to close the gas valve). 2) Check for gas leaks with soapy water for anything you're excited about. Really, just check every gas connection and gas water heater while you're there. I would also like to mention 306A in the Robershaw model # means try to ignite 3 times and check for flame detection for 6 seconds. Other models end with 304 (4 seconds), 106 (1 try and 6 seconds), etc. Simply set the microswitch on the Honeywell to 1 or 3 tries and 4 or 7 seconds. 7 seconds within Robershaw's 6 second specification according to the excellent documentation provided.

Pros
  • For 120VAC (up to 5.0A) surface igniter (Norton 201/271 or similar)
Cons
  • Small things
