This adapter displays the image on the monitor it is connected to as soon as you connect it to your computer. It gives you an IP address to navigate to in your browser to download the necessary driver. Apparently the driver is stored in the memory of the adapter itself. It's a nice touch that makes it hard to lose the driver if you need to reinstall it. Mine actually said there was a newer driver and offered to download it for me. After installing the driver, an icon will be added to the system tray area, with which you can set the resolution and mode (mirror or enhanced mode). It's not as smooth as simply plugging it into a different HDMI port, but it gets the job done with excellent resolution and clarity. I'm not a gamer so can't comment on refresh rate, but for a production system it works fine. Supplement - 08/12/2021. I noticed that my USB monitor is lagging behind my mouse pointer. I looked at the CPU usage and it increased by about 55%, which is much higher than system idle, so I used the task manager to list apps by CPU usage. Guess what the driver for this adapter is using - 42% CPU usage itself. Curse! It's a little silly. I wouldn't recommend this for an older computer, it can overload the processor and be too slow to be useful.
