Review on πŸ“¬ Black Locking Mailbox with House Numbers - Mail Boss 7500 Pro Curbside Security: Includes Mounting Plate and Pull Out Mail Tray by Matt Buchanan

Inexpensive secure mailbox

TL;DR: Relatively reliable secure mailbox with the right accessories that can be installed in half a day. Due to the construction of the key and the lock cylinder that holds the key, you can find alternative lock cylinders. ADVANTAGES (Positives): β€’ Box has a satisfactorily minimal profile β€’ Thick material but not bulky to install β€’ Lock looks much more burglar-proof than a typical waffle cylinder (or incorrectly called a disk cylinder in some cases) β€’ Fairly clear instructions β€’ Nice mounting plate : No need to try to use a ratchet inside the mailbox to attach it to a post or rail - install the plate and then slide the box in, which also means there are no holes in the bottom, through which water can penetrate. THE BAD (minor things): β€’ Powder coating isn't as thick as I expected β€’ Said powder coating is a real dust magnet β€’ The back of the device doesn't feel airtight and the powder coating doesn't cover the gap; However, the ledges on the bottom and the included tray likely minimize the ingress of rain that will wet the contents. β€’ Plugging a key into a new device can be a little UNSURPRISING (fault): β€’ I highly doubt the box can accommodate typical 3.5" tall packet unless it's as short as the approximate"Receipt box" in the description. When the door/divider is opened at something approaching the optimum gap, it appears like about 2" for a long package. β€’ Keys unduly thick for a point, they don't fit gracefully on my key fob, the slot is not large enough to allow full rotation on a thicker split ring key fob, and the lock holds the key when unlocked (which could be a problem in the next bullet point) β€’ When mail comes in, the mailbox will not come out without opening the acceptance chute, which poses a problem as the lock cylinder holds the key ring in place. The key can drop the door - and whatever the key fob's contents are to which it is attached dangles - open the receiving slot while holding the access door, or latch the door to remove the key. Due to key and lock cylinder issues I am hoping to find a standard high security cylinder lock with the correct profile, height and OEM latch.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • I won't say anything
