The filter cleaned the water well during operation. However, after a couple of weeks, the water output of the pump was reduced to almost zero (when the pump is running, a small waterfall is visible at the top of the filter cartridge block. I managed to revive it by blowing it with compressed air). and again submerged in water and run again. The filter worked for several days, then switched off again. Each time I got it running again, but each time it pumped less and less and held less and less time before it stopped. A month later he died completely. The water was not unusually dirty or filled with debris. Please note that the filter is hardwired to the tank. You cannot remove or replace it. If you try to clean it you have to do it directly above the tank because the cable is short. You can't turn off the filter without turning off the LEDs, probably a good feature if the filter is working, but can pose a fire hazard if the filter breaks like mine and you just leave the power connected to turn on the LED lighting obtained when a stuck or burnt filter is stressed and overheated. There must have been other versions of this tank as the current 2013 version has no box, no "plants", no gravel, nothing but a plastic tank. and built-in lighting and filter/pump unit. Keep that in mind as you read reviews here from those who bought the tank before 2013. Also, please note that many people here have tested the product before using it for any period of time. I wonder why these old reviews are even here. Tetra is expected to change a product's UPC code if they make a significant change to the product. This is a different product than what many have written about here. Whilst the tank is a good size and decorative (when properly filled with black gravel, decoration and plants) I would not recommend it even if you don't care about the filter pump as the pump is hardwired and not secure can be removed from the glued block. If it breaks everything has to be thrown away or you have to leave the rest LED and pump attached to the tank even when not in use. On the plus side, I see here that another reviewer's pump lasted a full 4 months. . I believe this area will last: 1 to 4 months. Future reviewers: Please comment your reviews with usage time. Don't unbox it, install it, or rate it 4 or 5 stars the same day. It doesn't help anyone. Put a note on your calendar to review in 6 months.
