I needed an external CD/DVD drive to use with a Raspberry Pi 4 to try and get some old games running with Wine and BoX86. Some work, some don't. Don't get me started on wine. Anyway, the packaging is just a regular little box with a disc wrapped in bubble wrap. I would say it was packaged well, but when I took the disc out of the box I noticed something inside was rattling. After opening the shell and shaking, a tiny steel screw can be felt! Oops! Luckily this didn't seem to matter too much as the drive was still running. However, I had to add extra power to the drive to make it work with the Pi. Thankfully, it has a micro-USB port and cable for it (although it was a bit short). The drive reads discs normally. I got the music CDs to work with no problems. The DVDs worked after I downloaded the necessary codecs for the Pi and recognized at least 95% of my old Windows game discs. The drive itself is basically a laptop-style drive housed in an external enclosure with a USB and USB-C cable coming out of it. Pros: Inexpensive USB-C connector Micro-USB connector for extra performance Cons: Inexpensive! Questionable quality control (that missing screw) You must unplug it from the Pi before shutting it down or the Pi will still work.
