I've been plugging and unplugging firewood for almost 20 years. I have expensive Robert Sorby instruments and cheap HFs nearby. People may notice my high quality Vicmarc shark jaw chuck mounted on a HF lathe that costs half the price. I didn't have carbide before this set and I like them. Carbide is characterized by hard materials. I found the flat surface was a good reminder not to use it as a traditional tool that often requires the bevel to move across the workpiece. Keep them flat and even and the results will be pretty good. I bought these to clean an epoxy blank. They handled mixed wood epoxy much better than any other tool I had. I then used them on some pieces of ash that I've been using as a spice for the past 2 decades. I was able to make two pretty candle holders out of ashes with minimal sanding and after 4 hours of sanding the first edge of the square cutter the bulling finally started to show. Because I can walk 32 hours in between. Two inserts and 4 edges - simply unbelievable. When you consider that there are two other tools in the kit, each with two inserts, that's a lot of turning. I might invest in a diamond sharpener and see if I can get them back on the factor edge. Even if I can't, it's probably worth $10-20 to buy new ones and get all three pairs of inserts back. If someone is buying these for bowls more than 3 inches deep or 8 inches in diameter, I recommend buying the longer version for safety. and more leverage. Anything smaller than these sizes, and they're almost perfect.
