This is a great addition to the set. Apparently other consumers had the wrong idea of what it really is. This is an additional stage of filtration for existing canister filters. I use mine to pre-filter detritus and other particles to reduce the need for a filter change on my main canister filter. In this capacity he never failed. Using this filter allows me to change my consumables like filter pads quarterly instead of monthly, which saves me money in the long run by reducing the number of filter changes. If you have a planted aquarium I highly recommend this as it greatly reduces the number of filter changes. Please read the description fully as other reviewers have given it poor ratings even though it is clearly written in the item's description. Good luck dear aquarist.
