Not what I expected

I just bought this printer and it wasn't what I expected. I had an Epson Picturemate that I really liked, but it died after about a year and a half. I figured I'd go back to HP and get an upgrade to at least the same good quality, more reliability, and 5x7 photos to boot. Setup was easy and I printed from Mac iPhoto in about 20 minutes. But unfortunately the first photo I tried to print was taken in difficult lighting conditions. It looks fine on screen, however, and there's a lot of interesting green-brown vegetation in the dark areas of the image. It looks fine on screen, but on the printer the dark patches of vegetation just blend into mostly black. I tried the alignment again, full cleaning process and online technical support. The technician asked me to move the photo back to the memory card. For some reason this actually helped and I have some detail in the dark vegetation but now the green clothes are blurry. I tried a sample photo from HP and it looks great. I tried another photo and it looks fine - lighter than the original, with more red than the original. I liked the original authentic colors but I could get used to these enhanced ones. I am disappointed that this printer does not accurately reproduce images on my computer. But it seems to produce well-lit shots with a vibrant quality I hope I'll enjoy. And I love being able to print 5x7 at home, and I also love being able to buy ink and paper separately, which you can't do with PictureMate.
