I have what I would call a non-standard installation. I don't want anything to do with a proprietary hub for a number of reasons. First of all, I don't want to lie in bed with any company if I can help. I want to be able to buy what I want, when I want, without worrying that my existing hub will support another product from a different manufacturer. Second, of course, I'm nervous about products on my home network that I don't have full control over. Call me old fashioned, but I am (note: I'm not an extremist, I'd just rather pull all the strings on the things I buy). With this in mind, I made great strides at the beginning of my home automation journey. Find and deployed OpenHab first, then switched to Home Assistant. These compact little sensors work well with both platforms, mainly due to the integration of zigbee2mqtt in both OpenHab and High Availability environments. My current use case is bathroom humidity. My son loves long hot showers (me too!) and no matter what I say he won't turn on the fan. Frustrated by his non-compliance and since I had only just started my automation journey, I decided to win the battle with technology! Now when this baby is installed in the bathroom and the humidity reaches a certain level, the fan will turn on automatically! No fuss, no fuss, and no more telling my son to turn on the fan! The best part is that he can't do anything about it. Ha! Dad wins the day! Overall this product has served me well and after 6 months of use the battery percentage is still in the 90's. It's worth buying if you either own your own hub or are willing to work a little to make it work for your solution.
