An extremely useful tool!

I've been wanting to try a digital thermometer for a long time and this one looks good. It comes in a well packed box wrapped in bubble wrap; The cable probe and instructions are also in the box that comes with the battery installed. Upon initial inspection I found perhaps the only complaint about the thermometer: the articulating probe is SO difficult to get out of the locking notch, at one point I had to use a wired probe to get it out. Thermometer turns on. You can increase the alarm temp if you want, which I did because I need the oil at a certain temp as it starts somewhere around 180 degrees (and I didn't want the alarm to go off all the time). I've found thermometer readings to be extremely accurate with both the wired and pivoting sensors on the unit itself. To test it, I filled a glass with ice and water, swung it around the sensor for 30 seconds and had the temperature measured. It's very touch sensitive, the probe tip takes most of the temperature reading so I had to be careful not to put it on an ice cube or it would read between 27° and 29° in my test. I've mostly used a wired dipstick to monitor the oil temperature as I didn't want the device to be so close to a hot pan or have to hold it the whole time. The wired sensor did an excellent job of this, allowing me to keep track of what temperature I was working at and whether I needed to increase or decrease the burner setting, and the thermometer was able to stay more than a foot from the heat. I have yet to try this on candy as I love glass candy thermometers but I'm sure it will work for this. The probe works well with meat and gives instant readings. As soon as she's done, I'll know. All in all I would definitely recommend this, I really wish there was a way to actually disable the temporary alarm all together rather than increasing it way above the range I would be in if I didn't want to, that it is then re-triggered as the temperature falls, then rises again. And something that would really be better for this device would be if it came with a carrying/storage case because you definitely don't want to drop it!
