Review on 🚽 Kohler Genuine Part 85406 2-Inch Toilet Flush Valve Kit, Various Color Options by John Wood

A big improvement over the old GP85160 flushing ball set

Water ran into the bowl. Replacing or thoroughly cleaning the damper usually improves the situation. In my case I turned off the water source and flushed the toilet to empty the tank to the top of the flush assembly. The flush ball has been removed to ensure the water is below the top of the flush ball assembly. Then I left for a few hours and when I came back the tank was completely empty. This suggested the need to replace the entire purge ball assembly (or maybe just tighten the three reservoir screws). The new GP85406 kit includes everything needed to complete the repair. The improved rubber seal is the biggest improvement. The rubber piece no longer prevents the large locknut from being tightened and you can achieve a proper seal (hand tighten to the stop and then turn an additional 1/4 turn with a suitable wrench). I reassembled the tank on the base and tightened three new bolts. The new bolts are superior to the old brass bolts which required a large flathead screwdriver to hold the bolts in place while the three nuts were tightened. The new bolts have caps to hold them while the nuts are tightened from underneath. Like installing a wheel on a car, lightly tighten each bolt and then move on to the next nut, continuing to lightly tighten each bolt until the tank is secure. Do not fully tighten one screw and continue with another as this could result in a crack in the reservoir or bowl. I use a bubble level to make sure the tank stays level as each screw is slightly tightened. Connect the water source and fill the reservoir. Then I turn off the water source and monitor the water level to make sure it stays level. It's also a good idea to keep an eye on the bowl to see if the water is dripping. However, water often seeps into the bowl for a short time after the tank is full. Give it time and then check the bowl to see if water is dripping into the bowl. If the water level in the tank drops, either the flap is leaking or the tank is not sitting properly on the basin. This is an easy project and the skill level to complete it is one or two. Just take your time tightening the three tank bolts and take your time with this part of the project.

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Could have opted for a newer model
