On the evening of October 20, 2022, heavy sleet suddenly began in Hong Kong, turning the streets into a layer of snow porridge that was then rolled down by passing vehicles. While driving a Touareg (with Goodyear Eagle F1 road tires) back to my place of residence, I noticed that the car acted as if I had not pressed the brake pedal at all, despite traveling at speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour (km/h) on the highway and within the city. Praise be to God, I made it safely home. Unfortunately, after parking, I had to drive my wife's car (an Outlander XL) to the garage to get winter tires (she was spotted there on 10/21/2022). When I first got the Out, I put brand new Michelin Latitudes on it (I bought it in August because my native breeches were already 5 years old) and was pleasantly surprised to find that it not only did not slip uphill when leaving the parking lot, but also slowed down; ABS of course too knocked in the leg, but the car slowed down perfectly; this gave me an undeniable advantage over other drivers. I was out on the Out again today (drove the wheels), and the Bridgestone winter velcro is great (quiet, plush, and more summer-like in its rolling characteristics than its summer counterpart). Nonetheless, the summer's Michelin was remarkable for its resilience. Touareg winter sticky breeches will be on my feet by tomorrow. If you ever find yourself in an unexpected scenario as I did (sleet), I highly recommend the summer edition of the Michelin Latitude. For the record, Michelin and Bridgestone tires are made in France and Japan, respectively; the supposedly Finnish Nokian tires don't even appear until 2022, and their reputation beyond that year isn't very strong.
