This head lantern (electric torch) is MUCH brighter and lighter than the one I purchased at Home Depot for $35 several year ago, which didn't even come with a case or rechargeable battery. This lantern's lower output setting is as bright as the $35 lantern's high setting. I purchased this lantern because it can also be powered by AAA batteries if necessary, which is critical for emergency use, such as when I was without power for 4 days during a major storm this last winter. The lantern is comfortable and fits securely on my head without a third, over-the-head, strap. The high quality case that comes with the lantern is semi-rigid yet washable -- a really nice addition to the lantern. The red lamps on the lantern are not nearly as bright as the main white lamp yet they are still plenty bright enough for checking a map or going through a bag in the dark if you need to preserve your night vision (e.g. hiking or boating at night). The lantern even has a series of green LEDs on the bottom side that tell you how much charge is on the integrated battery when you plug it in, which is a REALLY useful feature. Just remember, if you don't use the lantern regularly, you will likely need to check the battery every 4-6 months to ensure that the lantern remains charged and ready for use. I cannot yet attest to the runtime or endurance of the rechargeable battery.
