I remember hiking when my backpack started at over 60 pounds! Yes, 60 pounds and up on one ride. Over time, with some modifications, my typical starting weight will be around 45 pounds, which I find perfectly acceptable. Over the decades, I realized that even when I was in good shape, my joints weren't as forgiving as they used to be, and the only way to make those wilderness rides comfortable was with the weight to reduce significantly. This is where this book really benefited me as it drew my attention to learning every detail and getting rid of excess weight. I made a spreadsheet, listed each item along with its weight, and carefully examined everything on the list. No, I'm not an ultralight backpacker, but my dry weight is down to 16lbs, plus an additional 2lbs a day for supplies. This still gives me a starting weight of around 25lbs for a 5 day trip, but it's a lot lighter than 45lbs. This book helped me get there and continue these wilderness journeys.
