2016 BMW X3 bumper protector!

My 2016 BMW X3 is not compatible with the bumper guard (the type that attaches to the chassis rails that connect the bumper to the car). An alternative is to install a hitch that is much stronger than the chassis spars and then put in a typical hitch mounted guard/step (see photo). The drawbar I chose has a 2" x 2" receiver. The problem with this approach to the X3 is that the hitch is set very low. As a result, the bumper mounted on the tow bar is completely lower than the height of the bumper of the following vehicle and offers no protection! I discovered this the hard way (and my wife pointed it out to me when I was parked in front of a Subaru Forester😳). However, the 12-inch adjustable Trimax hitch runs vertically across the X3's bumper to the bumper tip and is a VERY STRONG piece of forged aluminum. It offers similar protection to a towbar mounted bike carrier, but is much more attractive and doesn't interfere with the tailgate. This setup does not protect the corners, but protects well from direct rear impacts. I didn't put an adjustable ball in because I care about the cars behind me. Without the ball, the adjustable towbar provides good protection without damaging the car's rear bumper. So far this is a great product for this purpose!

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
Cons
  • Good but not great
