Useless Hydrometer for Fish Tank

This Aquarium Hydrometer from Pet Supplies is a complete waste of money. Through trial and error, I found that the readings were inconsistent and unreliable. The design is also very flimsy and easily breaks, making it difficult to use. The only upside is that it's affordable, but you definitely get what you pay for. Save yourself the hassle and invest in a better quality hydrometer.

Pros
  • Affordable
Cons
  • Inconsistent readings, flimsy design

it does the job

Using a hydrometer to measure the specific gravity of water is a mixed bag. However, there are several ways to continue getting accurate readings. First pour water slowly, make sure all the fresh water has been poured out, so measure the first time, and then drain and measure again. This usually gives more accurate readings. and always make sure there are no bubbles on the gauge block. Bubbles can severely affect reading. Definitely a lot cheaper than a refractometer. I'll get one later, but…

Pros
  • Ready to use: just dip into the aquarium to fill with water, then stand on a flat surface to read
Cons
  • boring packaging

I have never used a refractometer, some people hate hydrometers but I personally like them. Much cheaper and once you know how to use it properly you can get pretty accurate readings. If you have thinner corals or fish, be sure to spend the extra money and get a refractometer, but if you're just setting up a new aquarium, it will do. YOU WILL NOT get an accurate reading if there are bubbles on the needle. Simply tap the hydrometer lightly on a flat surface a few times and the needle will level…

Pros
  • Extra wide stabilizing base: dual color scale with safety zone for easy results
Cons
  • Available in white only
