The negative reviewers must have overlooked the marketing. It's made from tea tree oil, so that's what it's going to smell like. It doesn't scent the whole house like a plug-in, but removes odors like wet dog, litter box, teens, and damp basement with a subtle or non-existent scent. I've found many useful uses for washing machines: the bathmat in our damp bathroom no longer gets moldy; the camper does not smell musty despite a long period of non-use; the shoe cabinet does not smell of shoes; old, musty china from a great-grandmother's house no longer smells like an old woman's house. I am an asthmatic with many allergies and unlike air fresheners and plug ins I have not had any side effects from using this material.
