Heats only during extremely cold times. It doesn't heat up when plugged in. The thermostat regulates whether it turns on. If the weather is not below 15 degrees, it will not turn on. It's just cold metal. You can't put it in a stall because my stall stays warm and won't turn on. I have it outside and my chickens don't use it because it rarely gets hot. Once I felt it heat up when we had fevers up to 10 degrees. waste of money.
