If you've ever wired your house or bought an old house and knew something was wrong with the wiring, they could be essential tools. I'm not thrilled with the tension pin as I don't find it to be as sensitive as some people state in their reviews. Yes, it can tell you if the outlet is on or off when you've plugged an object into the outlet and left it unplugged, but not a closed switch that powers the outlet or light. Not sure I'll be relying on that to tell me if the box is powered or not. The socket tester replaces my polarity tester as it gives me more accurate information on what is wrong with the socket. I've found out the hard way several times that something isn't plugged in properly. I've had houses that used electrical creativity and I've had to deal with that. Bringing it down to a more traditional, safer level would help.
