Review on Dremel EZ402 EZ Lock Mandrel by Doug Small

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Changing tool heads quickly is easy, but.

EZ-Lock mandrel works as advertised. This allows you to change cutting, grinding and polishing heads very quickly and easily. Once the mandrel is installed in your Dremel tool, no tools are required to change heads. This is a big improvement over the screw head mandrel, which requires you to remove a small screw from the top of the mandrel each time you want to change or replace the head. The only downside is that the bracket that attaches the cutting, grinding or polishing head to the shaft tends to come off the head too often. I recently completed a project using EZ Lock cutting heads designed for plastic to cut a piece of plexiglass to make a 32 inch round coffee table cover. The tool worked great, the edges were cleaned with a light buff made from EZ Lock Polishing Pads. The problem was that I tried at least 6 cutter heads as the metal bracket that attaches the cutter head to the EZ Lock mount kept coming off the head rendering the cutter wheel unusable. with a conventional mandrel and finished the job without changing cutter heads. Note that the EZ Lock cutting discs weren't worn out and still had plenty of life - they just detached from the mount. This could be due to the fact that I used them to cut a radius which put stress on the mount but I didn't force them and they cut well. If you're making straight cuts and need to change heads this tool is the investment Also note that the EZ Lock Mandrel will only work with heads marked EZ Lock. You cannot use the EZ Lock arbor with other manufacturers' tool heads like you would with a standard arbor. The only other downside to the EZ Lock range is the cost. Interchangeable tool heads are about three times more expensive than their standard arbor counterparts, but you're paying for the convenience.
