The rug arrived in a flat box and had a strange smell. I wiped it down with diluted rubbing alcohol and let it air out for a few days and it's fine now. If that doesn't work, I would try baking soda paste. The printed measurement marks are only on one side, so the term "two-sided" is misleading. Also, I didn't notice that the grid is only on the edges of the mat and not in the center of the field (e.g. Fiskars use dots in the field of their mats to help you align).
